Lead Horticulturist

Lead Horticulturist 2021      Reports to: The Manager/Owner

Position Summary: The lead horticulturist is responsible for overseeing all aspects of maintenance garden jobs. The primary objective is to maintain urban gardens with the assistance of a small crew to execute jobs with efficiency and care.

Responsibilities:  include a wide variety of horticultural applications, administrative communications with staff and clients as well as delegating tasks.

  • Horticultural:
    • Oversees the maintenance of gardens.
    • Tree, shrub and plant care, including but not limited to: planting, watering, light pruning, weeding (includes burning techniques), amending, feeding, raking, trellising  (jobs includes some use of power tools such as blowers, drills, saws….)
    • Inspection, handling, and transportation of nursery stock
    • Spreading topsoil/compost and other amendments and laying seed/sod (occasionally)
    • Properly sanitizing and caring for gardening tools.
    • Assists manager with upgrade projects and hardscaping (as needed)
    • Utilize appropriate personal protective equipment at all times for safety of self and crew
  • Administrative:
    • Prepare daily workflow sheets and tool and supply lists needed for the jobs. 
    • Procure needed material and supplies. 
    • Maintaining an inventory of tools, supplies and materials.
    • Complete and submit all required paperwork on a daily basis including: daily workflow job descriptions, staff hourly tracking, time and materials billing summaries, etc.
    • Ensure compliance with all company policies and regulations for both self and team.
    • Assist with misc client and vendor email communication concerning garden related performance.
    • Maintain a visual log of work  performed, regularly posting jobs on social media sites.
  • Organizational:
    • Plan each job in an effective manner to ensure optimum efficiency and effectiveness
    • Manage safety, quality and productivity of work at sites and/or shop/yard.
    • Coordinate, and schedule and delegate day to day work activities of a landscape crew up to 3 employees.
    • Maintain direct communication with clients when onsite.
    • Work in accordance with all local health and safety laws and regulations. (Including COVID requirements.)

Credentials:

  • Min 3 years experience in horticulture or related field
  • Experience delegating and leading projects
  • Ability to lift 40-60 pounds 
  • PA Drivers license. (drives manual transmission a plus, owns a truck a plus)
  • OSHA trained a plus

Job Type: ¾ to full time w/some flexibility  Salary: Hourly: $18.00 to $22.00 / hour based on experience w/on the job training available.

Description: Under the direction of the lead horticulturist, you will assist with upkeep and upgrades to urban greenscaping jobs. Work entails loading and unloading for jobs; shoveling and raking up yard debris; digging and preparing garden beds for planting and pruning perennials, shrubs, and small trees; watering: organizing tools and supplies; running errands; and  some hardscaping and light carpentry work.

Part-Time: 8-30 hours a week, as needed. 2 days a week to start 3 days guaranteed May-Sept. Hours increase as the season gets going. Some flexibility in days and hours available.

Rate: $14-$17/hr depending on experience with on the job training opportunities.

Qualifications:

-High School diploma

-Experience doing manual labor

-Ability to lift 40-60 pounds

-Willing to work long hours in all weather conditions

-Landscaping experience and familiarity with trade tools and practices (preferred)

-Valid driver’s license and ability to drive manual (preferred)
